The third person to fly an airplane is generally considered to be Glenn Curtiss, an American aviation pioneer. Richard William Pearse (3 December 1877 - 29 July 1953) was a New Zealand farmer and inventor. It is claimed that Pearse flew and landed a machine on 31 March 1903, nine months before the Wright brothers flew their aircraft. This is what makes him famous. However, he himself never claimed it.
