On a Cork Tree the bark is made of cork which has many uses in bottling and insulation. It was living when it was nearest to the water-bearing parts of the trunk. This tree usually grows in areas with a Mediterranean climate, The bark protects the trunk from the sun's heat and also helps to conserve water in lands where water can be in short supply. After several years the cork bark is cut in a special way and peeled in one piece for use in industry and wine bottle corking. The cork is given some years to mature because a certain thickness is required for making bottle corks.
