He was caught again, sentenced to prison again, and finally released in 1879 - whereupon he promptly formed a gang and resumed bushranging. He was finally caught when he and and his gang held up a farmhouse at Wantabadgery and held numerous people hostage. One man escaped and alerted the police. Nine policemen surrounded the farmhouse, and during the gun battle that ensued, one policeman and two of Captain Moonlight's gang were killed. Moonlight was captured, tried and hanged.
