The school was opened in 1904 by the suffragette, Emmeline Pankhurst. It is a two story red brick building of considerable character. The interior of the school has been modernised to accommodate children between the ages of 3 and 11 years.
The exterior is a fine example of an early 20th century building and is situated on top of a hill, overlooking the valley of the River Irk and giving a superb view of the local area. It is surrounded by ample playing space and landscaped areas.
The school is well placed for environmental studies. Children are able to walk to the swimming baths, two public parks, the school clinic and the local library. The nearby main roads provide convenient bus routs to many places of educational interest within the city.
During WW1 the school was closed to pupils and used as a hospital for wounded German Soldiers. Jim Callaghan MP was a teacher at the school in the 60's!
