The first writing inks date from around 2500 BC and were invented by the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. They consisted of lampblack (carbon) ground with a solution of glue or gums (cement), molded into sticks, and allowed to dry. Before use, the sticks were mixed with water. In later years, it was discovered that "sepia" could be used for ink. Sepia is a dark fluid excreted by squid and octopi as a defense against predators. As sepia ink ages, it turns brown...which leads to old, faded photographs being referred to as "sepia colored".

From the 6th to the 19th century, quill pens were the principal writing instrument. Many calligraphers still consider a quill pen the best writing instruments because of the quill's ability to produce a fine line with none of the harsh qualities of a steel nib. The U.S. Supreme Court still uses 1200 quills a year, upholding a tradition it began in 1801.

The writing Quill pen came into use as early as the seventh century after the Reed pen, and remained the preeminent writing instrument for most of the Western World for over a thousand years. Early scribes wrote and decorated the pages of their manuscripts, including The Bible, with the Quill Pen, while others were penning the Magna Carta.. This instrument was used to create great works of literature, books, daily correspondence, and historical documents that changed the world, such as the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. Wars were started, won and lost, and some were even averted by the stroke of the quill pen. After the invention of the metal nib, Quills were still habitually being used as a matter of choice for many because of its flexibility and writing excellence.
