The first writing inks date from around 2500 BC and were invented by the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. They consisted of lampblack (carbon) ground with a solution of glue or gums (cement), molded into sticks, and allowed to dry. Before use, the sticks were mixed with water. In later years, it was discovered that "sepia" could be used for ink. Sepia is a dark fluid excreted by squid and octopi as a defense against predators. As sepia ink ages, it turns brown...which leads to old, faded photographs being referred to as "sepia colored".
