'Big Ben' is the nickname for the Great Bell inside the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster although people now (incorrectly) refer to the clock and the clock tower as Big Ben. The clock tower and the adjoining Houses of Parliament were built in the mid 1800's to replace an earlier building which burned down in 1834. The buildings as they can be seen today, were completed in 1858 and Big Ben started striking the time in 1859 after the first bell developed a crack and had to be re-cast.
