Living in hiding was very difficult. One needed trustworthy friends to bring food and so forth, and the penalties for sheltering Jews were drastic. One also needed somewhere to hide. In general, living in hiding was not possible in small towns. One chances were usually better in a big city. However, it was not common.

People resisted the holocaust by leaving the area or by hiding. Some people did fight back but very few were armed and most were unable to resist.
