James Oglethorpe was not in the Civil War. He wasthe popular English colonist who designed the town of Savannah from scratch,by copying an olddrawing of an imaginary classical city.
It meant that the squares on his grid were big enough to accommodate the splendid mansions that came later andstill survive.
