No it was never easy for her. Growing up an African American in the south in the 30's was always difficult. She couldn't attend the same schools as white children, couldn't go to college, had to sit in separate locations on the bus, in restaurants, couldn't use restrooms as white women, couldn't swim in the publc pool, and she became a house keeper.
