Well, both. First, cities were very small hamlets back then compared to today. Also, most battles were in fields and surrounding farmlands-- most of the US, even in cities, mostly consisted of farm lands and woodlands. The Battle of Gettysburg was more "near Gettysburg" than inside the town. The battlegrounds is a very interesting place to visit, even though it should be considered a sacred place because of how many men died on the land/the battlefield.
