Yes...in the old tradition of the court you placed your hand on The Bible and the court officer asked you "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you god".
However this old tradition is no longer used in the vast majority of todays courts due to the fact that not everyone is a christian and considers the bible as a holy book..even the oath has been changed in the vast majority of courts to exclude the phrase "so help you god" for much of the same reasons...
It's possible that I am mistaken, but I believe it tends to be the New Testament that people swear upon.
...on a bible.
No you dont a swear to the bible cause your going to get in trouble
it's people who swear at noon....
The person asking the question is talking about a brain teaser. It is probably the the one which shows the word 'swear' over bible, and resolves to 'swearing on the bible".Or, just possibly, "swear on a stack of bibles".
They do not.
Rachel
no you should not swear on zwinkycuties or anything else.God says in the bible that he does not want you to swear on anything because thar is like cursing him out.
The bible in legal precedings is just a symbol that many people did and still od recognize as incredibly important.
If you are a Christian or a Jew, you may be asked to swear an oath on the Bible before giving evidence, saying that the evidence you give will be wholly truthful. Usually, if there is a court recess during your evidence, you would not be asked to swear a new oath on the Bible, but you may be informed that the oath you have already given continues to apply. If you are not a Christian you do not need to use the Bible, but may ask to give an affirmation instead of a religious oath. Muslims may swear by the Koran in some jurisdictions.
To swear into office
No, but most people wouldn't appreciate being called it anyway.
