Galileo's most significant observation and discovery was that the universe (or now the solar system) was Sun-Centered. Originally, people accepted the Copernican theory that the universe was Earth-centered. For a few years Galileo had to defend his discover until 1616.

What led to Galileos discovery of a way to measure small amounts of time more accurately?

Galileo held a pendulum up to his heart and timed the beats. This is what led to the discovery of measuring small amounts of time more accurately.

Why was Galileos idea considered so unusual at that time?

Beacause people thought that the Earth was the middle of the universe, not the sun.

When Galileo saw four moons revolving around Jupiter which scientific belief was challenged?

Galileos discovery of those moons led people to realise that not everything in the universe moves round the Earth. It raised the question of whether the Sun travels round the Earth or not. A hundred years after Galileo's time, scientific discoveries were making it increasingly clear that the Sun is at the centre of the solar system.

How did Galileos discovery contradict the teachings of the church?

In the early 1600s the Church still accepted the word of the early theologians that the Earth was the centre of the universe. They were ready to reconsider any alternative ideas provided there was enough evidence. Copernicus came up with a model that had the Sun at the centre and it seemed to work well in predicting the planets' positions, but it was accepted as only a useful model. Galileo was told he could teach it provided it was understood as a model and not a statement of reality. Galileo was a forceful character who said he was cleverer than all the cardinals, and he brought out a book describing the heliocentric theory, in which the Pope was portrayed as a simpleton. He was put on trial and asked for evidence that the Sun is at the centre, but at that time there was not sufficient evidence and he retracted. In the following century science had advanced to a point where it was discovered that the Sun is far more massive than the planets and therefore must be at the centre.

Why did Charles Darwin find it difficult getting his theory of evolution accepted?

Everyone at the time of Darwin's discovery believed that people were created by God instead of evolution. We were supposedly perfect, but to believe that we had evolved made us look imperfect due to the evolution of the body, and other such features.
