It was sort of a tie. Korea remained divided, so neither side got to see it reunified under the government they supported. On the other hand, the U.S. stopped the spread of communism and the U.S.S.R. maintained a communist buffer state.
Joseph Stalin supported the North Korean attack in South Korea. Without his support there would have been no Korean War, as we know it today. The Korean War was a US-Soviet War fought by proxy. When Stalin died in 1953, the Korean War ended (1953).
The communist superpowers; USSR & Red China (Nationalist China was a US Ally).
Cold War is when US and USSR is fighting on the economic functions (capitalism, communism). Korean War started because USSR wanted to spread Communism to the Pacific. Why? USSR was a group of Communist countries and same with US (they had NATO, USSR had something called Warsaw Union) so the more members, the bigger they become. When China and Northern Korea (North didn't exist yet officially) attacked south, US and UN stopped them from conquering the peninsula. So the Korean War is started, and is, officially, going (although the armistice was signed, it didn't end)
Really the only US success during the Korean War was South Korea continued to exist. America did not winthe war (they probably would have if it weren't for Chinese intervention) and Korea is still divided among a highly guarded political boundry.

The 38th Parallel on the globe, same as today. That border was established by the Allies at the end of World War 2 in 1945, and it remained the border at the end of the Korean War in 1953.
