Best Answer

The Olympic Games were held every four years from 776 BCE at the temple of Zeus at Olympia in southern Greece as a celebration for the god.

It was discontinued a thousand years later under Roman rule when the celebration had become corrupted. It was revived in modern times in 1896 as a purely sporting event.
