Very important - built for the pope.
In order to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel Michelangelo spent years lying on his back on scaffolding.
The Sistine chapel is located in the Rotunda in the back of St. Peter's Cathedral at the Vatican which is located near the centre of Rome in Italy.
The Sistine Chapel is in part of the Vatican buildings within the Vatican State. The Vatican State is an independent country (the smallest in the world) totally enclosed by the city of Rome, Italy.
It was not customary for artists to sign their work back then. At least not on murals.
He suffered permanent back troubles after painting overhead for 4 years on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
When Michelangelo pained the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, he may have been lying on his back. But some experts maintain he was sitting or even standing up.
Mostly laying on his back on scaffolding that brought him within reach of the ceiling.
The White Chapel was built around the 12th dynasty by the Pharaoh Senustret I. Amenhotep III was the Pharaoh that took apart the chapel in order to fill his Karnak in the 18th dynasty.
The Sistine Chapel ceiling and one wall were painted by Michelangelo. His frescoes have become popular modern prints, the unbelievably beautiful touching of hands or giving life. It is the only chapel that took so many years to complete, and restored about 6 years ago or so, and interestingly enough, when the grime was removed, one of the angels who was sent into hell had serpents wrapped around his torso and finally holding on for dear life to his private part. I found this interesting that the artist would give that sort of punishment, especially when the Pope had problems with the nudity in the beginning of the chapel painting. The Sistine Chapel is also different from other churches because it is where the Cardinals have always met to select a new Pope. The Chapel is also located in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican, Rome, Italy.
He created a set of scaffolding on which he could lay on to paint the ceiling. He used a technique called Fresco where the pigment is mixed with wet plaster and applied to the wall. This meant that he had to know how fast he could paint an area before the plaster dried.
It actually took him less than four years, as he was absent for long periods and had to be forced back to continue work. What he did in this period was to fill the entire ceiling with murals, about 520 sq metres = 5600 sq ft.
Michelangelo. Took him 4 years with most of it on his back laying on scaffolding. It is 70 feet from floor to ceiling and he painted it going toward the pulpit. Today when you visit it you enter from a door behind the pulpit, so to see it correctly you have to walk to the other end and walk towards the pulpit. The Vatican has a web site you can go to and take a virtual tour of the Sistine.
