President Washington's first term of office began on April 30, 1789. The US Supreme Court was formally established by the Judiciary Act of 1789, adopted on September 24, 1789, nearly four months after Washington began serving.
President Washington nominated the first six justices to the US Supreme Court the same day the Judiciary Act became law, and they were confirmed by the Senate two days later, on September 26, 1789.
The US Supreme Court convened for the first time on February 2, 1790, in the nation's first Capitol, New York City.
