Even in 460 BC, after the tower had been crumbling for many years, the Greek historian Herodotus visited the tower and was very impressed. "It has a solid central tower, one furlong square, with a second erected on top of it and then a third, and so on up to eight. All eight towers can be climbed by a spiral way running around the outside, and about halfway up there are seats for those who make the journey to rest on."

However, when the Jews were taken into captivity and arrived in Babylon, they were astounded to find the great ziggurat that seemed to reach almost to the heavens. For the first time, they began to hear languages from all over the known world, whereas in Judah they were accustomed only to West Semitic languages such as their own, and Egyptian. They began to associate the babble of different languages with the great tower, and began to wonder whether one was the reason for the other. And so, we get the myth ofthe Tower of Babel.
