The cent (a/k/a "penny") was the first of those denominations to be minted, in 1793.
The first $1 coins were released a year later, in 1794.
Nickels didn't appear until 1866. Before that, the 5-cent piece was a tiny silver coin called a half-dime. These too were first made in 1794.
