Not counting a few guerrilla cavalry raids, the Battle of Gettysburg would be the last time a Confederate army would undertake an offensive on northern soil.
A long interval while both the armies stopped for re-fitting. Gradual tilting of troop-numbers in favour of the Union. Appointment of Grant as General-in-Chief of the Union armies, and his success at keeping Lee on the defensive in Virginia till final surrender.
The Battle of Gettysburg ended on the third day of fighting, with the shattering of the final Confederate attack, known as Pickett's Charge. This charge was directed at the center of the Union line, just south of the town of Gettysburg. With its failure, the Confederate Army slowly moved west and then south, in a long retreat back to its base in Virginia, with the Union force following cautiously behind.
