The history of the invention of the telephone is somewhat disputed. What is certain is that Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the patent in 1876 and that patent was the most valuable in US history (which is, doubtless, why it was so disputed).

Like many inventions, the telephone is made up of several components and relied on earlier work (particularly the telegraph). A telephone has three major components; a microphone that converts sound energy to electrical energy, a wire to carry the signal and a speaker to convert the electrical energy back into sound.

Bell's microphone and speaker were identical, but soon after Bell's patent, Thomas Edison developed a carbon based microphone which was a great improvement. The early wire system was also improved; early versions used a single wire and relied on the ground providing the return circuit.
