This is a reference to the division of the earth into various languages after Babel. Prior to this, all people spoke one language.
Before the seven continents, the mass of land was called " pangea".
The answer depends on what it is that the earth is meant to be dividing. I was not aware that the earth divided anything in two halves!

The earth is divided among 40 time zones (not 24) because before standard time started catching on in the late 1800s each of the thousands of cities kept its own time, and that started to get confusing as technology started making transportation and communication faster.
