If you are looking for a non-biblical explanation for the fiery chariot, consider that it was commonly understood throughout the ancient Near East that the sun god was taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot. Then look for passages in the story of Elijah that could predate the overall story, and have been references to the sun god.
