the battle of midway was fought by mainly air, partly sea, and no land. The US had planes station on Midway, but no actual fighting took place on land. It was mainly a battle of air craft carrier based air planes bombing the enemies ships.
The Battle of Midway was fought entirely at sea by aircraft from Japan's aircraft carrier forces, the United States Navy aircraft carrier forces, and land-based aircraft from Midway.
The objective of the Japanese Navy at the Battle of Midway was two-fold. The first objective was to lure the American carriers out and destroy them. This would have given the Japanese Navy total superiority in the Pacific. The second objective, was to land an invasion force at Midway and take the atoll (the "island" of Midway). This would have provide Japan with an easternmost base capable of launching land based bombers to Hawaii.
The US Navy at Midway had 3 carriers, about 50 support ships, 233 carrier aircraft, as well as 127 land-based aircraft.
There were a number of famous and significant land and sea battles in the Pacific during WW2 . On land the Battle for Iwo Jima and at sea the Battle of Midway were two famous battles .
