The South were quite intoxicated by their victory, and did not expect it to be a long war at this early point.
The Battle cannot be classified as the turning point of the war - for which there are several candidates.
Antietam - because it allowed Lincoln to declare war on slavery, which kept the British and French out of it.
Chancellorsvile - because Stonewall Jackson was killed, and Lee's army was never so effective after that.
Vicksburg and Gettysburg - the double win for the Union, emotively on July 4th (1863).
Chattanooga - where Grant saved his army from starvation.
Atlanta - a dramatic capture which helped Lincoln to win the election of '64.
