the confederacy fired the first shot of the civil war
Some southerners from the US call people from the north Northerners while there are some that call them Yankees. Others simply call them by their first name.
Their attitudes about war were very similar - the Civil War would be short, glorious and a victory for their own side. This battle proved them wrong.
Southerners believed the Europeans were on their side and would rally to support them. They also believed the North would tire of the war and give up. Northerners believed they were fighting for the right cause (preservation of the union) and believed the Confederacy would be no match militarily for the Union army.
The South fired the first shot in the American Civil War.
In the first half of the nineteenth century, the Southerners believed in the institution of slavery while the Northerners didn't. This eventually caused the Civil War which brought the country together eventually after its conclusion but at great expense.
