Hal Jordan did die once. After having his home city of Coast City destroyed, he went mad with power, killed the rest of the Green Lantern Corps, and took on the identity of Parallax. While he continued to threaten the rest of the DC Universe, Kyle Rayner took his place. Then, during the Sun Eater crisis, he gave up his life to reignite Earth's sun, and became the Specter, God's Right Hand. He stayed to for around a decade before fighting his way back to life in 2004
