If you follow the prototypes of "Father Christmas" you go through several Christian related avatars, but eventually get back to Odin from the Scandinavian tradition. He road through the sky on his eight legged horse Sleipnir, children would leave gifts of food for the horse and Odin, in turn, would leave small presents for the children. Odin was the head of the Aesir, the Norse gods, and definitely not a Christian.
