How it was used - Pharaohs used pyramids as burial chambers for their mummified bodies. Ancient Egyptians believed that when a pharaoh died, he transformed into the king of the dead and needed to be buried with his material possessions from this life.
The great pyramid was built over a period of 10-60 years (depending on the source), by Pharaoh Khufu (and his successors) around 2550 B.C. There is no evidence that this original and biggest Egyptian pyramid, was ever used, or ever intended to be used, as a tomb of any kind.
The underground room or chamber in a pyramid, often referred to as the burial chamber, was used to house the sarcophagus of the pharaoh or the noble person for whom the pyramid was constructed. It was the final resting place where the deceased would be laid to rest. The chamber was carefully constructed and sealed to protect the body and its accompanying treasures.
Egyptians used their pyramids only as a burial place for one Pharaoh per pyramid. The great majority of Pharaohs were interred in the Valley of the Kings, in subterranean graves dug out in the rocks.
