The New York mob has been around for a very long time, and still is. Its' most active time was from the 1920s' to the 1970s'. It is very inactive today compared to the days of old, and the stability of a mafia in the world of crime is impossible to sustain in America, so only gangs remain.

I will give you one. Look up the Chicago mob scene. It was very active and with some leading players. Also there is a Kennedy mob connection in Boston with the grandfather of JFK. He made his money as a bootlegger.
