St Paul has been Minnesota's capital since Minnesota was a territory in 1849. It remained the capital when Minnesota became a state in 1858. The first name for the city was Lambert's Landing, referred to as Pig's Eye, when Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant started a popular tavern on the river.
