After the first pitched battle (Bull Run/Manassas, July 1861), both sides realised they weren't ready for combat, and there was no significant fighting for the next six months.

Also at Gettysburg (July 1863), both armies had taken a bad hammering, and nothing much happened after that in the Eastern theatre until Grant launched the Overland campaign in May 1864.
