A biplane is any plane that has a double wing, above and below, often with fabric covering and connected by wires. Almost all early airplanes were biplanes because they needed more lift at the slower speeds that the relatively small engines could produce. By the 1930s, biplanes were practically obsolete, metal mono-wing construction having advanced to prominence. There are still biplanes used in aerobatic shows, and they were widely used in aerial crop dusting.
