Death Valley was eventually named National Park because of it's historical importance, as well as it's unique ecosystem and, in many places, raw beauty. It was part of the passage for wagon trains to California, and one of the hardest parts of the journey, as it has the highest consistent summer temperatures in North America, coupled with a dearth of fresh water. Even the towns and way stations there were named by the passing pioneers to reflect the difficulty of their passage: "Badwater", "Furnace Creek", "Endurance".
