yes there were prehistoric birds,infact after the dinosaurs birds ruled.one of which was a gastornis,humungus in size this bird feasted on anything it could find.extreamly teratorial and had a very good maternal instinct one of its favourite foods were mamals what had just evolved after the dinosaurd had died with a comet or a volcanic erruption there are many theorys.
