Nylon is a synthetic fabric which was invented just before WWII. It is made from oil. Before nylon ladies stocking's were made of silk. So were parachutes. The Japanese controlled the areas where silk comes from, so during the war nylon had to be used to make parachutes, and there was none available to make ladies stockings, or hose. Silk stockings came in pairs, one for each leg, and were fastened at the upper thigh by snaps hanging down from a garter belt, worn at the waist. Silk stockings had a seam up the back of the leg, where the silk was sewed together. When the ladies had ruined the last pair of silk stockings they had, some resorted to painting a line up the back of the leg with makeup, so at a distance it would look like they had on stockings. Ladies wore dresses - it was somewhat indecent to wear trousers or pants or jeans, and going without stockings was something like being half-dressed.
Tights did not really become popular until after the war, and then mostly as an item for young girls. I think they were mostly made of cotton at that time.
In World War Two, nylon was important for making parachutes. She ripped her nylon tights again.
Nylon was used to make materials in the war such as parachutes and ropes.

Because all of DuPont's nylon production was focused on the war effort, for parachutes, tents, etc.

They wore dresses and pants when in sports. This was the beginning of women wearing pants. During the war, they couldn't wear nylon stockings so they drew lines up the back of their legs to represent the seam of nylon stockings
