Voices in ones head are the voices of God for people who need help to have a better life on earth. Most people like Van Gogh are artists, and have fears that are initiated in childhood by a harsh environment. Van Gogh - and others - may not be able to see that harshness.If they're brave and strong enough to see the world is not always good and nice, voices disppear again.
