Macchu Pichu is the first major Inca township to have been discovered largely untouched by humans since it was built. It was first found by the American explorer Highram Bingham in 1926, and although long since abandoned and fallen into some ruin naturally due to the passage of time, it had not been razed or destroyed in warfare as so many Inca settlements have been. It has provided a fascinating insight into the ordinary lives of the Inca people, and for the first time enabled historians to gain an understanding of aspects of their life and culture that was previously unknown. It is now a UNESCO protected World Heritage Site.
