...because the Earth is tilted on it's axis. So as Earth revolves around the sun, the distance from any one point on Earth to the sun varies throughout the year. The further a point is from the sun, the colder it gets (winter) and the closer it is to the sun, the warmer it gets (summer). The tilt of the axis also explains why the seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
