Yes and no. There was only a few Asian-Indians in the US before the Luce-Celler act of 1946 which then allowed 100 Indians immigrating to the US per year (still not a lot I know) - because they were such a minority there was no need to legislatively discriminate against them; so they didn't use 'colored' bathrooms and district etc. Also many were educated which wasappreciateda great deal in the north, whilst there wasmiscegenationlaws in many states up until 1969 this was not specifically targeted at Indians and many probably could have gotten away withinterracialmarriage - especially Brahmin Indians who look very fair skinned and are often mistaken as Europeans. I don't doubt there was some petty discrimination; but as a generally there was no formal segregation against Indians sanctioned by the government.

Were there segregated units of the army in World War 2?

If the question refers to the US Army, all units were segregated according to race. A white unit was all-white. A black unit had black enlisted and NCOs commanded by white officers, as did the Japanese-American 442nd Regiment. Racial segregation in the US Army did not end until the Truman Administration during the Korean War. In WW2, I think there was a small unit of American Indians from various tribes, part of the 101st Airborne division, but they were also segregated from the white soldiers. The Indians were "Code Talkers". Only the Marine "Windtalkers" Navahos are really known, but the Army used individuals of different tribes for the same reason.

If India is in Asia do they classify as Asian?

India is an Asian country because in this sense we are talking about geography. In the same way Egypt is an African country and Russia can be considered an European country as well as an Asian country. Racially it would depend on where you are from; the United States and Canada share a similar racial usage of the word Asian as opposed to the British. Since Indians, Iranians, Egyptians, etc. are classified as Caucasoids by anthropologists, whereas Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. are classified as Mongoloids by anthropologists, it would be improper to refer to a Chinese and an Indian as belonging to one Asian race. They are of two different races, and in typical usage, when referring to Asian, people are referring to THE Asian race. In the US and Canada, Asian refers to Mongoloids from Asia, such as people from East Asia and Southeast Asia. In Britain it is reversed, Chinese people are not being referred to by the word Asian in Britain, whereas an Indian is referred by the word. In the US and Canada, when people are talking about Asian people, they are not talking about Indians. Just like in the US and Canada, when people are talking about Africans, we are not talking about Egyptians. Its in new york and michi
