The soul group who recorded hits like "I'll Be Around" were not British. They were American. There was, however, an unrelated British folk group called The Spinners. And in Britain, the American group is referred to as The Detroit Spinners, hence Detroit, the city the group was from.
Before using Detroit Spinners they were known as the Motown Spinners, and this was because they didn't want to be confused with a folk group the Spinners.
