In the early days of space travel many animals were sent into space as part of experiments. The first animals in space were fruit flies, launched in a U.S. V2 rocket in 1947, and safely ejected and parachuted back to earth after reaching 68 miles high. The second animal in space was Albert 2, a monkey launched in 1949 also in a V2 rocket. Albert died after his parachute failed.

Many other animals, - monkeys, dogs, rabbits, mice and others were launched into space and eventually into orbit. The US, Russian, French, Japanese, and Chinese Space agencies all took part in these experiments.
