The cruise ships may say no but if you miss your ship for some reason you are stuck in a foreign country without a passport. A mess at least. US can't even go to Canada or Mexico without a passport these days. I say get a passport if you want to travel internationally.

Usually for any type of cruise you need a passport, especially if you plan on getting off the cruise when it ports to look around the certain locations. However if the cruise is just around the US, or another country where you are a native, then a passport would not be required.
