During the great depression, a large number of farmers remained on their farms. They grew their own food. In North Dakota, rather than buy coal to keep the houses warm, the farmers burned wheat in their stoves. In Alabama, farmers ran their cars on moonshine.
In western Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas, and the other areas near there, a number of farmers had to abandon their farms. They sold to ranchers. They came to California to work on the farms and factories in the central valley and the area near Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Others came to the Midwest or Northeast seeking factory or other work.
