The eastern cottontail can be found in most of the eastern United States except for New England. It has been introduced to parts of southern New England. It is also found in parts of New Mexico and Arizona. There is a subspecies of cottontail in New England, the New England cottontail (Sylvilagus transitionalis), that is very similar to the eastern cottontail. It has a black patch between its ears.
