If you can get a visa and residence permit for the country you want to go to then you can teach english abroad legitimately. You may have problems getting a residence permit though especially if you are asked to show police records. If you are just looking for casual work then a high percentage of teachers don't bother with the permit in places like South America. But in the Middle East for example you can not live there with out one. The actual ESL employer is very unlikely to ask about convictions and is equally unlikely to be able to verify them from abroad. Get a job as an English teacher or as an au pair. I've yet to find any other ways...
Some popular places to teach English abroad include Korea, China and Japan. These countries have various programs set up for English speakers to go and teach English in their country.
Just to give you more info, I am English and would like to study in France/Spain or Italy if this is possible, which I thought it was, but looking on the internet can't find any languages courses at foreign uni's and my school are no help, so I don't know what to look for/where to look
