The shift solenoid is inside the transmission on the valve body.
The shift solenoid for a 2001 Grand Am is located on the side of the transmission. It is accessible by removing the transmission pan and the filter. The shift solenoid is mounted to the side of the transmission and is attached with two 7mm bolts. To access it you will need the following tools: Ratchet 7mm socket FlashlightOnce you have the tools you can remove the pan and filter to gain access to the shift solenoid. You will then be able to remove the two 7mm bolts and replace the shift solenoid.
The shift solenoid is located within the transmission on a 99 Montana. Unless you are very mechanically inclined, it is best to bring it to a shop to have it done.

I'm not sure about a Pontiac, but on my mom's Ford Escort it is located under the all the plastic housing where the gear shift is mounted on the floor. It should be located somewhere near your safety interlock override button, as this is attached to the solenoid itself. You can use the override button to bypass the solenoid if it quits working so that you can get at least get your car in gear until you get a chance to replace solenoid.
