The 'Silurian' it a geological time period that extends from the end of the Ordovician Period, about 443.7 ± 1.5 million years ago, to the beginning of the Devonian Period, about 416.0 ± 2.8 million years ago. This is real.

In the UK TV show Dr. Who there are reptilian characters called the 'Silurians'. These are not real, they are fictitious. It is unfortunate that Dr. Who should have confused children with reptiles called 'Silurians' because of cause the reptiles were not present on earth during the geological Silurian period, they are much later (in the Jurassic). I pointed this out to the authors of Dr. Who as a 15 year old child when they first broadcast the 'Silurains', the director wrote back and apologised but said that it was legitimate use of 'artistic licence' - I disagree, the BBC was wrong to potentially confuse children.
