During the Middle Ages people did eat according to wealth and social status. Wealthy people had better meats than poor, and were able to afford fine pastries, deserts, and spices. But there were also sumptuary laws, that made it illegal for people to eat above their status. This meant that serfs and wealthy middle age people alike could not eat certain kinds of foods, including cuts of meats, game, and imported foods.
