The muppets did appear on Ed Sullivan's show. The characters were not the same as the Sesame Street characters. They appeared several times through out the shows run.
The Muppets were out as a sub-feature act on various Television shows such as Jimmy Dean, Ed Sullivan, maybe Johnny Carson- in the mid sixties. I do not believe Sesame Street came out before the early seventies- and they were not original cast members, but were worked into the fabric- such as Big Bird.
The Muppet Show premiered on 5 September 1976, however the Muppets as character appeared on Sesame Street and even earlier in various commercials & TV shows starting in 1955.
